Acer Aspire VX15 Notebook : Review

With a full line of notebooks, Acer has solutions for all types of consumers. One of the manufacturer’s series that catches the eye is the Predator, which has dedicated gaming devices.

The name Predator has been successful in recent years, but was limited to a select audience, considering that the more robust configurations increase values significantly.

To offer an alternative to the gamer looking for a more affordable option, Acer now launches the Aspire VX15 line, which comes with similar visuals and a balanced configuration to run the latest games.

The new Aspire VX15 arrives in Brazil with a seventh generation Intel Core processor, plenty of RAM and a GeForce 10 series graphics card. Is it ready for the heavy gameplay? We tested the product in various situations and now we bring a verdict for you.

Specifications

Design inspired by the Predator series

As a practical matter, we started our review by evaluating the product design. Well, in this regard, Acer’s entry-level gamer project surprises positively as it approaches the daring look of the Predator line, but features punctual increments that guarantee a unique and unprecedented identity.

The carcass has traits similar to those we have seen in the Predator, especially on the diagonals that give a bold look. The brushed steel lid follows the straight red lines, which unfortunately do not shine, but that combine cool with the air vents on the back.

The name ASPIRE VX is in the metal area, positioned between the cover and the cooling system behind. This region gives a break in the composition, since it has significant changes of colors and also of style. The name engraved here is opposite the Acer logo on the cover.

The diagonals used in the external composition work well around the keyboard and touchpad, where there is plenty of breathing space. However, to give harmony, Acer was forced to use the same diagonals on the cover, something that was a little weird around the screen, since we are accustomed to edges that follow the same format of the display.

The red color is striking in the composition of the Aspire VX 15, with details on some keys (W, A, S and D), on the touchpad and also on the air vents. The look is complete with the backlit LEDs on the keyboard, which glow red.

The design of the Aspire VX15 resembles the most top-of-the-line machines of the brand, but differentiates itself by the simplicity in some points. The reduced measures also impress, since this is a gamer laptop that you can carry everywhere without worrying about the weight, which is there around 2.5 kg.

High quality but not so colorful screen

Considering the target audience, Acer limited the Aspire VX series to models with a single screen size. As its name suggests, this handset comes with a 15-inch display, which is quite satisfying to enjoy games on the go.

Full HD resolution is great for viewing high definition content, and games are great on this screen. The surface is anti-reflective, which guarantees good results even in environments with enhanced lighting.

The brightness level and contrast balance guarantee images with enhanced color. Despite these qualities, the display of the Acer Aspire VX15 is lacking due to lack of fidelity as the user changes the angle of the screen. The images become very dark, which forces the player to always remain in the same position.

Performance tuned

Of course the visuals are important, but players give a lot more attention to hardware, do not they? Well, at this point, Acer has mastered the settings of the Aspire VX15. The model we tested was powered by the Intel Core i7-7700HQ, a quad-core component that runs up to eight threads and has a clock rate of 3.8 GHz in Turbo mode.

This chip is one of the most powerful for notebooks, especially for thin models like this Acer – and other devices we’ve seen from other manufacturers. The performance presented is ideal for any heavy activity, and this component should have no difficulty running the latest games.

In our tests, the performance was quite satisfactory also by the adequate memory for the proposal of a laptop gamer. This model comes with 16 GB of DDR4 memory, allowing you to run multiple apps or run very heavy games. The only disappointment was the storage component, which is a 1 TB HD of 5,400 revolutions per minute.

In practice, this means it takes a long time to open some games. On the other hand, Acer seems to have prioritized the ample space to hold many games. As we have already criticized in several reviews, the ideal would be to have at least a 240 GB SSD or a combination of SSD with HD. Acer has an option with SSD, but it seems that it is not available in stores in Brazil.

The Aspire we tested came with the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, which by the way is the same video card used on desktops. With 4 GB of GDDR5 memory, it has the power to run the latest games in Full HD, but this is only possible if the notebook you plug into the socket, because it uses a lot of power.

Also, it is good to point out that this graphics chip consumes a lot of energy, so it is good to regulate the graphics (decrease the quality or deactivate filters) if you are only playing on the drums for better gameplay.

Benchmarks in games

Batman: Arkham Knight

Grand Theft Auto V

Rise of the Tomb Raider

I’m almost there.

Notebooks gamers do not always do well on power tests and the Aspire VX15 is not much different at this point. Constant use of the video card and fans limits the battery life. We got to play games for about an hour and twenty minutes.

In the Powermark entertainment test, this Acer achieved a little less than two hours in duration, which is a plus or minus result (Samsung’s model did better in this test). If you are just going to browse and watch videos, you can expect duration of almost 4 or 5 hours, which is less than the manufacturer promises.

Extras

It is very difficult for a gamer notebook to deliver a comfortable experience, even more with a video card that gets very hot. Acer’s cooling system is smart, but still not perfect.

The central region of the keyboard heats up very much, marking almost 50 degrees Celsius in some regions. This bothers a lot in some games, since it is normal to use several keys and warm up your hands during games. The rest of the heat is properly dissipated by the outputs at the rear, which prevents the entire screen from getting hot. The system is quiet, which is a very positive point.

The audio of this Acer exceeded our expectations. With Dolby technology, the loudspeakers gain a boost in sound, which leaves the bass balanced and the equalization very pleasant. The volume is also good, which guarantees an immersive experience in games.

Worth it?

The race now is for entry-level notebook computers and Acer has delivered a very competent model capable of competing with the big competitors. The Aspire VX15 arrives as a gamer ready for heavy gaming with a bold design.

The visual follows the Predator line, which pleased us a lot, since it differs from other manufacturers laptops that are not yet so much increased. The hardware configuration is ideal for enjoying your games with good quality, even being able to abuse textures and filters.

Perhaps, the great contra is the lack of an SSD, which limits the performance in the system and games loads. The battery also leaves something to be desired, so you can prepare to carry the charger in your backpack. By the way, by the way, this Acer is very lightweight, which is great for anyone who wants to take the PC of games everywhere – and this breaks the argument of who says “with this money gives to build a PC much better”, since We are talking about portability here.

Now, what really matters is NVIDIA’s new video card. As you can see in the graphics, the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti shows itself well prepared for modern games with great results in high quality. It has a good good advantage over the GTX 1050, so if you have the money, bet on the stronger version.

Anyway, the Aspire VX15 comes in to compete with models like Samsung Odyssey and Dell Gaming; And makes it beautiful in every way. If you want an incoming gamer, this Acer might be a great choice.

The values of this Acer range from 4,599 reais in the version with GTX 1050 to 5,999 reais for the top model with 16 gigabytes of RAM and GTX 1050 Ti. Prices are within acceptable but it is difficult to recommend the more robust configuration, Because the jump in performance seems pretty salty to the consumer.

It pays to buy the Aspire VX15, but perhaps the most basic model is a better option or it may be cool to expect a promotion.
